Terms of Service

Please read these terms carefully. They explain what you can expect from FlowFin, what we expect from you, and the limits of our responsibility — especially that FlowFin records and calculates shared money but never moves it.

1. Agreement to these terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Kishore Muchintala (“FlowFin”, “we”, “us”) covering the FlowFin website, web application and apps (the “Service”). FlowFin is a free, non-commercial personal project, open to anyone while it runs on demo bank data. It is not a company or a commercial service. By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these Terms. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility and your account

  • You must be at least 18 and able to form a binding contract.
  • You do not need a bank account to use FlowFin. US citizenship, permanent residency, and a particular immigration status are not required; international students, including F-1 students, are welcome.
  • Give accurate information and keep it up to date.
  • Keep your password secret, use a strong unique one, and tell us promptly if you suspect someone else has access. You are responsible for activity on your account.
  • One person per account; accounts may not be sold or transferred.

3. What FlowFin does — and does not do

FlowFin helps you explore bank syncing with demo accounts, record shared expenses, calculate who owes whom, get payment due reminders, and track settlements.

FlowFin does not move money. We are not a bank, money transmitter, lender, payment processor, or escrow agent, and we do not hold funds. Settlements recorded in FlowFin are records of payments you make outside the Service; marking a debt settled does not transfer money.

FlowFin is not financial, tax, legal or credit advice. Balances, due dates, categories, analytics and split calculations are informational. Always check amounts and due dates with your bank or lender before relying on them — data from institutions can be delayed, incomplete or wrong, and a missed payment reminder does not excuse a payment.

4. Demo bank connections through Plaid

Bank linking uses the Sandbox test environment of Plaid Inc., which provides simulated institutions and sample data only. FlowFin does not connect to real financial institutions. You agree not to enter real bank credentials in Plaid Link — use the test credentials shown in the app. By linking a demo account, you authorise FlowFin and Plaid to process that sample data as described in our Privacy Policy, and you agree to Plaid’s End User Privacy Policy. You can unlink a demo account at any time. We are not responsible for the availability or accuracy of data supplied by Plaid or your institution.

5. Shared expenses and other people

  • Content you add to a shared expense or group — amounts, descriptions, receipts, comments, settlements — is visible to its members. Only add people who have agreed to be included.
  • Balances between you and others are a record to help you settle up. They do not create a legally enforceable debt by themselves, and FlowFin is not a party to, and does not resolve, disputes between users.
  • Records are append-only for accuracy: edits are recorded as a reversal plus a new entry, so history stays visible to everyone in the expense.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the Service for anything unlawful, fraudulent, or to launder money;
  • harass, threaten or impersonate others, or add people without their consent;
  • upload content you do not have the right to share, or malware;
  • access another person’s account or data, or probe, scan or test the Service’s security without our written permission;
  • scrape, overload or disrupt the Service, bypass rate limits, or reverse engineer it except where the law allows;
  • resell or build a competing product from the Service.

7. Your content

You keep ownership of the content you add. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, process, display and share it only as needed to operate and improve the Service and as described in the Privacy Policy — for example, to show an expense to the people in it. You are responsible for your content. Feedback and bug reports you send may be used without obligation to you.

8. No charges

FlowFin is free. There are no paid plans, advertising, or other ways FlowFin earns money. If FlowFin ever becomes a commercial service, we will publish new Terms and ask you to accept them before you continue using it, and you will never be charged without agreeing first.

9. Our intellectual property

The Service — its software, design, logos and the FlowFin name — belongs to FlowFin and its licensors. We give you a personal, revocable, non-transferable licence to use it under these Terms. No other rights are granted.

10. Suspension, termination and deleting your account

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from Profile & Settings. We may suspend or end your access if you break these Terms, create risk or legal exposure for us or others, or if we discontinue the Service. Because FlowFin is a personal project, it may be discontinued at any time; where reasonable we will give notice first so you can export your data. On termination your licence ends, and data is handled as described in the Privacy Policy. Sections that by their nature should survive — including disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity and governing law — survive termination.

11. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ACCURACY. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE OR SECURE, OR THAT ACCOUNT DATA, BALANCES, DUE DATES OR CALCULATIONS WILL BE COMPLETE OR CORRECT.

12. Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, FLOWFIN WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, LATE FEES, INTEREST, OVERDRAFT CHARGES, CREDIT IMPACT, OR AMOUNTS OWED BETWEEN USERS, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR US$100.

Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits, so they apply only to the extent permitted. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.

13. Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend and indemnify FlowFin against claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your content, your breach of these Terms, or your violation of any law or another person’s rights.

14. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of , without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and disputes will be resolved in the courts located there, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring proceedings locally. Before filing a claim, please contact us so we can try to resolve it informally.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms. We will change the effective date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the updated Terms.

16. General

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and FlowFin about the Service. If a provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent. If FlowFin becomes a registered business, we will tell you and ask you to accept updated Terms before they apply to you.
